FYI: FBO Now at Grissom Aeroplex
Grissom Airfield has the longest runway in Indiana — 12,500 feet. Grissom Aeroplex, adjacent to the airfield, is owned by MCEDA. It includes nearly 148,000 square feet of hangar space, more than 1 million square feet of aircraft ramp space and a 360-acre "Shovel Ready" Aviation/Industrial park with direct runway/taxiway access.
From Flyover to Extended Stay
Grissom Aeroplex officials want to encourage corporate landings and then offer marketing materials on-site. The city of Valparaiso would agree with the strategy. When William Runzel IV, a pilot and CEO of Lake Cable in Chicago, landed at the Valparaiso airport, he met a pilot and local businessman who had high praise for Valpo. Runzel inquired further, and the Valparaiso economic development team presented a proposal. The result was Prairie Cable, a $5-million manufacturing plant.
With general aviation services available at Grissom Aeroplex in Miami County, economic development leaders hope to land some new businesses.
Montgomery Aviation has signed to serve as the fixed-base operator (FBO) for civilian airport operations. The FBO makes civilian aviation possible by providing services that include fueling, aircraft maintenance, waiting room, pilot's lounge and other transit aircraft services. A Joint Use agreement between the United States Air Force and the Miami County Economic Development Authority (MCEDA) authorizes civilian use of Grissom Airfield. "The Air Force is a great partner," said Jim Tidd, Executive Director of the MCEDA.
The fixed-base operator also means a more solid economic development base as well. "We're looking primarily to attract heavy aircraft maintenance, aircraft manufacturing and air cargo," said Tidd. "These opportunities at Grissom are enhanced now that we have an FBO in place."
Tidd also takes a high-altitude perspective. He wants Grissom to become a low-cost fuel provider for corporate aircraft traveling across the United States. "A lot of flight routes go right on top of Grissom," he explained. "So, when corporate aircrafts land there, we'll have marketing materials in the FBO for those who might be impressed flying over our region (and see, for example, the highway system) and want to check it out."
