MIND Puts Nanoelectronics in Indiana

"There's nothing like this in the Midwest."
Patrick McMahon, Executive Director, Project Future

The Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery proves that, in nanotechnology and economic development, small can be huge.

The Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery (MIND) at Notre Dame is one of only four nanotechnology research centers in the United States established by the Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI) of the Semiconductor Research Corporation, a consortium of semiconductor manufacturers. The goal is nothing less than to revolutionize the technology industry by developing the next generation of devices that will replace today's semiconductors.

Patrick McMahon, Executive Director of Project Future, the non-profit economic development organization of St. Joseph County, said, "...if we can capture a portion of those new business activities associated with these new devices, we will transform our local and regional economy for years to come."

Notre Dame was chosen from 30 institutions vying for the research center. The City of South Bend and Project Future allied with the university to create a hospitable research and economic development environment that paved the way for MIND, including Innovation Park, the campus-based technology park, and the St. Joe Metronet, a dark fiber network providing state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure at cost-effective prices.

"Small" has a great future at Notre Dame. McMahon pointed out Austin, Texas, home of one of the other NRI centers, as a model. He said, "One need only look at Austin... to witness the economic explosion those cities have enjoyed following their involvement in the development of new technologies."
